Prostate Cancer Awareness Month: Speak to Your GP
💬 Let’s Talk About It
Prostate cancer isn’t always easy to talk about, but it’s a conversation that could save your life. This Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, let’s spread the word and encourage the men in our lives to take action.
September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, a vital time to raise awareness, encourage early detection, and support the men in our lives in taking charge of their health. At Seaford Heights Medical Centre, we are committed to supporting our community by providing the information and care needed to stay well — and that starts with a conversation.
What is Prostate Cancer?
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men. It occurs in the prostate — a small gland located below the bladder that helps produce semen. Most prostate cancers grow slowly, but some types can be aggressive and spread quickly if not detected early.
Who is at Risk?
While all men are at risk, certain factors can increase the likelihood of developing prostate cancer:
- Age – Most common in men over 50
- Family history – Having a father or brother with prostate cancer doubles your risk
- Lifestyle factors – Diet and weight may also play a role
Symptoms to Watch For
In many cases, early-stage prostate cancer does not cause symptoms. That’s why regular check-ups are so important. When symptoms do appear, they may include:
- Difficulty urinating or a weak urine stream
- Needing to urinate more often, especially at night
- Blood in urine or semen
- Pain in the back, hips, or pelvis
These symptoms can also be caused by non-cancerous conditions, but it’s important to get them checked out.
Early Detection Saves Lives
The good news is that when caught early, prostate cancer is highly treatable. A simple blood test known as the PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) test can help detect potential issues. If you’re over 50, or have any risk factors, talk to your GP about whether PSA testing is right for you.
